Marc Chagall was born in 1887 in Vitebsk, Belarus, and developed an early interest in art.

 

In 1907, after having studied painting, he left Russia for Paris where he lived in an artist colony in the city’s suburbs. During World War II he was persecuted by Nazism for his jewish origins and was forced to move to the USA, where he frequented many of the artists who had also fled from Europe. He also showed his works in many exhibitions thanks to the support of the gallery owner Pierre Matisse, son of Henri.

Chagall is nowadays considered the artist of childhood, as the expression of his creativity was through the representation of a world painted in light a vivacious colors, in the style typically used by children. He was a multifaceted artist who lived throughout what is considered the most important century of the history of humanity, never as a spectator or as a simple aesthetic but as a true protagonist, knowing those aspects that sometimes keep away even those who deal with art. All this without ever losing that lightness that seems to be the main feature of all his works.

Chagall died at the age of 97 in 1985, in Saint Paul de Vence, in France.
